One of the best ways I’ve found to get those around me to start making more sustainable choices is to give them an eco-friendly gift. It can be difficult sometimes to think of eco-friendly gifts that people will enjoy, and not feel like it is adding to their household chores. I hope this post will give you some ideas about a FUN eco-friendly gift you can give for Mother’s Day.
1. Travel Silverware Set

One of my favorite gifts to give is a travel silverware set. They are inexpensive and can be found on Amazon in a variety of sizes and choices (my fave is a set with spoon, knife, fork, chopsticks, & straw). I prefer to get stainless steel, but bamboo sets are also available.
They can be used for travel, or at an office, for a picnic…pretty much anywhere you need a utensil. The inside of the case above is lined to be water resistant, so dirty silverware can go back in it. You could also get an additional small bag for the dirty silverware to gift with the set.
This gift has been a big hit with people I’ve given them to. So much of a hit that some have said they are going to steal my idea and start giving them as gifts themselves.
2. Bowl Covers

This is one of the eco-friendly gifts I am getting my mom for Mother’s Day this year. I just bought my first set a few months ago and have fallen in love with them! They are so convenient and easy to use, and eliminate any need for saran wrap.
I got my set from Marley’s Monsters (one of my favorite places to find eco-friendly products). Mine are machine washable, and have a polyurethane fabric liner on the inside, with linen or cotton on the outside.
I’ve had no issues with any smells in my refrigerator when I use them. I had one that got a red stain on the polyurethane lining, but set it out in the sun for a few hours and the stain disappeared.
3. Plaine Products Travel Set

This is a great option for the woman in your life who loves beauty products. They come in metal containers and are TSA-compliant. The travel set comes with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion (not pictured because mine is at my office). There’s also a separate travel size spray hand sanitizer available.
This is also a great way to test out if you like Plaine Products, without having to buy the more expensive and larger full-size products. Even if mom doesn’t like the products, she can reuse the bottles for her travels after they’re empty!
If mom likes their travel-size products, she can get their full-size products either as a one-time purchase or a subscription. You ship back your empty containers when you get a new one, and they reuse the containers.
4. Stashers

One of my favorite things I’ve purchased in my sustainability journey is Stashers. These are a replacement for Ziploc bags. They are dishwasher safe, microwavable, oven-safe up to 425 degrees, can be boiled, frozen, and written on in dry-erase marker. They are powerhouses!
Stashers are certainly an investment, but they are totally worth it. Stasher also partners with TerraCycle to recycle the bags when they can no longer able to be used (I haven’t experienced an unusable bag, but imagine sharp objects are the cause of most issues).
They come in a wide array of colors, in addition to sizes, and Stasher is a certified B corporation, 1% for the Planet member, and women-owned business.
5. Reusable Straws

A pretty standard beginning for many people on their sustainability journey is to get reusable straws. These make a great gift. Check out The 3 Easiest Single-Use Plastic Swaps for a more-detailed breakdown on reusable straw options.
Pick the type you think your recipient would actually use, and get them something to carry clean and dirty straws in. My mom prefers stainless steel, while I prefer bamboo, so keep in mind that you may have a different preference than your recipient.
